A Global Nomad: International Buddhist Scholar Sonakanti Barua

Sonakanti Barua: The scent of the soil along the basin of the Shankha River, winding gracefully past the hilly contours of Chittagong, has always been a fertile breeding ground for wisdom and spirituality. Emerging from this very soil is one of its finest sons—Phra Sona Kanti Barua, an internationally acclaimed Buddhist scholar, social philosopher, and researcher. Embarking on a journey from his humble roots, he has carried the torch of peace, fraternity, and enlightenment to the global stage. Far more than just an essayist or researcher, he stands as a relentless pilgrim of peace in a turbulent world.

The Call of the Roots and Monastic Initiation

Silghata is a traditional, serene village nestled in the Satkania upazila of Chittagong. Born there into an aristocratic middle-class Buddhist family, Sonakanti Barua’s philosophy of life was nurtured under the affectionate guidance of his late parents, Gyan Ranjan Barua and Manjuri Bala Barua.

In his youth, transcending all worldly attachments in pursuit of ultimate truth, he renounced domestic life and was ordained as a Buddhist monk. This spiritual awakening earned him the venerable title “Phra Sona Kanti Barua” on the global stage and across the pages of his epistemological works. Although he later returned to lay life, the inner monk and the Buddha’s message of non-violence (Ahimsa) never faded from his soul; instead, they became the defining leitmotif of his life.
