Buddhism and AI: The Jamyang Buddhist Centre and Science and Wisdom Live are set to host a special live dialogue on Buddhism and Artificial Intelligence on 20 June, bringing together experts from Buddhist philosophy and AI research to discuss one of the most fascinating questions of our time: “Can Thinking About AI Help Us Understand Our Selves?”

The event will be held in London and will also be accessible online, allowing participants from around the world to join the discussion.

Bridging Buddhism, Science, and Artificial Intelligence

According to the organizers, the dialogue will explore how the traditions of Buddhism and modern science can offer fresh perspectives on the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The discussion aims to examine fundamental questions about consciousness, identity, and the nature of intelligence in an age increasingly shaped by AI technologies.

Distinguished Speakers

Geshe Tenzin Namdak, Resident Teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre. He received teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and completed a 20-year Geshe degree program at Sera Jey Monastery.

Professor Murray Shanahan, Emeritus Professor at Imperial College London and Principal Scientist at Google DeepMind. His research spans artificial intelligence, computational neuroscience, and the philosophy of mind.

Chris Scammell, Co-founder of the Buddhism and AI Initiative, who will moderate the discussion.

Key Questions to Be Explored

  • The dialogue will address several thought-provoking questions, including:
  • Why does talking to AI often feel like talking to another human being?
  • Do AI systems possess any form of understanding or awareness?
  • Could artificial intelligence become conscious in the future?
  • What can Buddhist teachings reveal about intelligence, consciousness, and the sense of self?
