The 84000 Buddhist Knowledge Archive has unveiled a new brand mission and redesigned website as part of its global effort to preserve, translate, and share authentic Buddhist teachings with the world. The nonprofit initiative, 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha, has spent more than 15 years translating and safeguarding Tibetan Buddhist scriptures while making them freely accessible to readers, researchers, and practitioners worldwide.
According to the organization, the transformation marks the beginning of a new chapter aimed at “opening the door to authentic sources of Buddhist wisdom.” The initiative also announced a renewed vision focused on “planting the seeds of awakening” for a rapidly changing world.
84000 Buddhist Knowledge: New Website Expands Access to Buddhist Teachings
Founded by renowned Bhutanese Buddhist teacher, author, and filmmaker Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, the global project has introduced several modern features on its new website. These include a “Reading Room” designed for general readers and a “Scholar’s Room” tailored for researchers and academics. Users can now explore Buddhist scriptures, compare translations, access multilingual resources, and utilize various academic research tools.
Executive Director Huang Jing Rui stated that the upgraded digital library also includes audio and video content to help modern audiences engage with the Buddha’s teachings through shorter and more accessible educational presentations.
Launched over 15 years ago, the 84000 project was originally created to translate Buddhist scriptures preserved in classical Tibetan into English and make them available globally. The organization noted that previously only around 5 percent of the complete Buddhist canon had been translated into modern languages, putting this vast body of knowledge at risk due to the shortage of qualified translators and scholars.
As part of its long-term goals, the organization aims to translate approximately 70,000 pages of the Kangyur — the recorded words of the Buddha — by 2035, and 161,800 pages of the Tengyur, the traditional commentarial texts, by 2110. Currently, nearly 50 percent of the Kangyur has been published, while around 80 percent has already been translated.
The organization also confirmed that while artificial intelligence and emerging technologies will assist future translation and research efforts, human oversight, authenticity, and academic standards will remain top priorities.
84000 Buddhist Knowledge explained that although its earlier work primarily focused on translation and research, it is now entering a phase where equal importance is being placed on making Buddhist knowledge meaningful and accessible for people of different languages, educational backgrounds, and learning styles.
Through initiatives such as Khyentse Foundation, Siddhartha’s Intent, Lotus Outreach, and Lhomon Society, Rinpoche continues to support Buddhist education, translation, humanitarian work, and sustainable development worldwide.
According to Rinpoche, regardless of how rapidly the world changes, the Buddha’s 84000 Buddhist Knowledge teachings continue to offer guidance for identity struggles, mental challenges, leadership issues, family life, and everyday human experiences. He believes these teachings are becoming more relevant in the modern era than ever before.
